Vishing, short for voice phishing, is social engineering carried out over the phone, where an attacker impersonates a trusted party to trick someone into revealing information or transferring money. AI voice cloning has made vishing more convincing by letting attackers mimic specific people.
Defenses include verifying the voice with biometrics, flagging synthetic or cloned voices, and process controls such as callback verification for sensitive requests.
